WALTER BARTMAN, Founder and Director of the Yellow Barn Studio and Gallery
Walt teaches landscape, still life and figure painting classes and workshops, here and abroad. His career spans four decades. He received a Master of Fine Arts in Painting and Art History from American University and he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Belgium and Holland. His philosophy of painting centers on personal interpretation and the unique approach to the ordinary. For him, a great painting includes all the arts. He works with all levels of students and challenges them to “see” more.
Walt’s own work is representational in subject, but with an abstract approach to seeing and expressing his thoughts on canvas. He is a colorist and he shares his knowledge with his students.
It is the invisible that needs to be found, the clue is in the visible.

RACHEL COLLINS, Watercolor Instructor
Watercolor painter Rachel Collins teaches weekend workshops at the Yellow Barn, working with students at all levels of experience. In her own work, she considers herself a realistic painter of nature’s abstract form. Originally trained as a librarian and archivist, she became a full-time painter in the mid-1990's. An interest in natural science illustration has influenced her work in watercolor as fine art, and is reflected in her frequent choice to view her subject up close. She paints regularly in her studio at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, VA, has taught watercolor since 1996 in both the U.S. and abroad, and shows her work regularly in local, regional and national exhibits. She has been awarded signature membership in the National Watercolor Society, the Watercolor USA Honor Society, and the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, among others. Outside the visual art world, she plays the bassoon and currently serves as chairman of the Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of Mount Vernon, Virginia.
God is the most subtle of designers. The artist works to bring something of the excitement of this design and form in the natural world to the attention of all viewers, so that our vision of even the mundane may be changed.

Things aren’t all so tangible and sayable as people would usually have us believe; most experiences are unsayable, they happen in a space that no word has ever entered, and more unsayable than all other things are works of art, those mysterious existences, whose life endures beside our own small, transitory life. – Rainer Rilke

I consider myself a perceptual realist. Like poetry, the subject is evident but is transformed into something less tangible and at the same time more complex by virtue of both associations and extractions
Having had the opportunity to work with so many talented artists and faculty has contributed immeasurably to my growth as an artist.
